PAT Testing Certificates: What You Need to Know

17 March 2026 4 min read

After PAT testing is completed, you receive documentation that proves your appliances have been tested. Here is what to expect and how to use the certificates.

What Documentation Do You Get?

After PAT testing, you receive a certificate or report listing every appliance tested, along with its test results and pass or fail status. Each appliance is also physically labelled with a pass or fail sticker showing the date of testing and the date of the next recommended test.

What the Certificate Shows

A typical PAT testing certificate includes the date of testing, the name and qualifications of the tester, a unique identification number for each appliance, a description of each appliance (make, model, location), the tests performed (visual inspection, earth continuity, insulation resistance, etc.), pass or fail result for each test, and any observations or recommendations.

Failed Appliances

If an appliance fails PAT testing, it will be labelled with a fail sticker and should be taken out of service immediately. The certificate will note which appliances failed and the reason for failure. It is then your responsibility to have the appliance repaired by a qualified electrician or to replace it.

How Long to Keep Records

There is no legal requirement specifying how long to keep PAT testing records. However, best practice is to keep records for at least two testing cycles (typically two years) and ideally for the full working life of the equipment. Records are important evidence if an incident occurs and you need to demonstrate that you maintained your equipment properly.
